How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe with Vintage Finds

The best capsule wardrobes are not bought in a single season. They are assembled slowly, from pieces that have already proven their staying power.

How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe with Vintage Finds

The best capsule wardrobes are not bought in a single season. They are assembled slowly, from pieces that have already proven their staying power.

Start with what cannot be replicated

Certain fabrics, cuts, and proportions were made in eras when production standards were higher or simply different. A 1990s Levi's 501 made in the USA, a Burberry mac from the 1980s, a Barbour jacket with real waxed cotton: these things are not made the same way now. Sourcing vintage is not about nostalgia; it is about quality that new retail rarely matches at the same price.

Buy one category at a time

A coherent wardrobe is easier to build when you focus. If your next gap is outerwear, spend three months looking for the right coat rather than buying four things you are only partially sure about. Patience is the skill most people do not develop when they start buying vintage.

Condition grades are your guide

We grade every piece from Mint Condition down to Good. Mint Condition and Excellent pieces are safe for any wardrobe. Very Good pieces have had careful use but no defects. Good pieces have character consistent with age but nothing that detracts from wear. If you are building a working wardrobe, stay with Excellent and above.

The pieces that anchor everything

Every capsule needs three anchors: a coat, a trouser or denim, and a bag. These are the pieces you wear most and replace least. They are worth spending more on once and buying them right, rather than cycling through cheaper options every season.
